Welspun Corp The Company, Which Makes Pipes For Oil And Gas, Water Infrastructure, And Hydrogen Transport Is Making Strong Moves In The Pipe Manufacturing Sector, With Major Expansion Plans Both In India And The United States

Welspun Corp Limited, a global leader in large-diameter pipe manufacturing, announced on June 3, 2025, a ₹5,482 crore ($655 million) investment to expand its production capacity in India and the United States, targeting a $10 billion pipe market. In India, the company is investing ₹1,000 crore to add six Oriented Polyvinyl Chloride (O-PVC) pipe lines, with two operational in Bhopal and four planned in Raipur and South India over the next 12–24 months, driven by demand from the Jal Jeevan Mission. In the U.S., Welspun is establishing a new facility to capitalize on the oil and gas sector’s growth, with its Arkansas plant fully booked for eight quarters and securing ₹5,400 crore in orders for coated pipes since February 2025. The expansions, supported by a ₹19,500 crore order book, include High-frequency Induction Welding (HFIW) and Longitudinal Submerged Arc Welded (LSAW) pipes for hydrogen and LNG projects. CEO Vipul Mathur projects 12–15% EBITDA margins, aligning with tariff-driven reshoring under President Trump’s 25% steel import tariffs. The initiatives will create 500 jobs across both regions, boosting India’s 1.2 million and Arkansas’ 50,000-strong manufacturing workforces.

For the precision machining industry, Welspun’s expansion highlights the critical role of cutting depth in pipe manufacturing equipment. Components like pipe dies and coating applicators require CNC milling with precise cutting depths, typically 0.01–0.1 inches per pass, to achieve tolerances within ±0.001 inches and surface roughness as low as Ra 16 µin for high-strength alloys. 5-axis milling machines, optimized for cutting depth to balance material removal and tool life, support automated production with real-time quality control. The expansion drives demand for local machine shops to supply precision tooling, adopting Industry 4.0 technologies like AI-driven milling and additive manufacturing. As part of a $50 billion precision manufacturing market, this project creates opportunities for suppliers in India and Arkansas, where manufacturing jobs grew 2% since 2022, strengthening energy and water infrastructure supply chains.
