VanTran and MGM Transformers celebrated the grand opening of a 430,000-square-foot advanced manufacturing facility in Waco, Texas, on April 24, 2025, to scale U.S.-based transformer production for critical sectors like EV infrastructure, data centers, renewables, and utilities. The $20 million facility, following MGM’s 2024 acquisition of VanTran, unlocks over $1 billion in annual production capacity for custom liquid-filled transformers, addressing a U.S. transformer market projected to grow from $8.3 billion in 2022 to $14 billion by 2032. The plant, located at 2700 Texas Central Parkway, is expected to create 700 high-quality jobs over five years, building on VanTran’s 250 existing employees in Waco, which has operated since 1974. President Ty Gayeski highlighted transformers’ role in “powering AI data centers, clean energy, and industrial reshoring,” while CEO Doug Banty noted reduced lead times for grid infrastructure. Supported by local leaders like Congressman Pete Sessions, the facility strengthens national resilience amid global supply chain disruptions and President Trump’s 10% tariffs, contributing to Waco’s 15,000-strong manufacturing workforce.
For the precision machining industry, the facility underscores the essential role of CNC milling operations in transformer manufacturing. Producing transformer components, such as cooling fins and mounting brackets, requires precision-machined parts crafted through CNC milling operations on 5-axis machines to achieve sub-micron tolerances for reliable assembly. These operations optimize cutting sequences and tool changes, ensuring efficiency in automated production lines with real-time quality control. The facility’s scale drives demand for local machine shops to supply custom tooling, adopting Industry 4.0 technologies like AI-driven milling optimization and additive manufacturing.
