TRUMPF Exits Metal 3D Printing Unit, Sells PBF-LB Business to Lenbach Equity
TRUMPF, a global leader in industrial machine tools and lasers headquartered in Ditzingen, Germany, has agreed to sell its laser beam powder bed fusion (PBF-LB) metal additive manufacturing business to Lenbach Equity Opportunities, a private equity firm. The transaction marks a strategic shift for TRUMPF, as it narrows its focus on core laser technology and industrial automation, while stepping back from direct competition in the rapidly evolving metal 3D printing space.
The divested PBF-LB division specialized in high-precision metal additive manufacturing systems used in industries ranging from aerospace and medical to high-performance tooling. Under Lenbach’s ownership, the business is expected to receive capital investment to scale production, expand its product portfolio, and improve software integration.
For the precision machining and advanced manufacturing sector, this move may lead to new collaborative opportunities. As metal 3D printing becomes more accessible, hybrid approaches—combining subtractive and additive techniques—are gaining momentum. Shops already working with high-temp alloys, complex geometries, or low-volume custom parts may find new service niches in post-processing, support removal, or multi-axis finish machining for 3D-printed metal parts.
