Rolls-Royce North America Is Expanding An Engine Plant In Aiken S.C., To Increase Machining Capabilities. The $75-Million Project Will Be Conducted In Two Phases, Starting In Q1 2026. It’s Expected To Create 60 New Jobs
Rolls-Royce Solutions America Inc., a division of Rolls-Royce Power Systems, announced on July 15, 2025, a $75 million expansion of its Aiken, South Carolina, engine plant at 660 Bettis Academy Road, Graniteville, to boost production of mtu Series 4000 engines for data centers, hospitals, and critical infrastructure. The two-phase project, starting in Q1 2026, will add 37,000 square feet in Phase 1 and potentially 22,000 more in Phase 2, totaling 60,000 square feet, with production beginning by July 2027. The expansion shifts component machining from Germany to the U.S., enhancing supply chain resilience and reducing lead times for the Mankato, Minnesota, assembly facility. Supported by South Carolina’s Coordinating Council for Economic Development job credits, it will create 60 new jobs, bringing the Aiken workforce to 434, bolstering the region’s 8,000-strong manufacturing base. Aligned with President Trump’s 10% global tariffs, it targets a $5 billion power generation market driven by a 50% surge in data center demand. Managing Director Adam Wood stated, “This investment strengthens our ability to deliver reliable, U.S.-built power solutions.”
For the precision machining industry, Rolls-Royce’s expansion emphasizes the critical role of clamping force in manufacturing engine components. Parts like crankshafts require CNC milling with precise clamping force, typically 500–2,000 pounds, to achieve tolerances within ±0.0005 inches and surface roughness as low as Ra 4 µin for high-strength alloys. 5-axis milling machines, optimized for clamping force to ensure workpiece stability, support automated production with real-time quality control. The project drives demand for local machine shops to supply precision tooling, adopting Industry 4.0 technologies like AI-driven milling and additive manufacturing. As part of a $50 billion precision manufacturing market, this initiative creates opportunities for suppliers in South Carolina, where manufacturing jobs grew 2% since 2022, strengthening energy supply chains.
