Rocket Lab Announces Flatellite: A New Satellite Designed for Mass Manufacture and Tailored for Large Constellations
Rocket Lab USA, Inc. (Nasdaq: RKLB) has unveiled Flatellite, a groundbreaking satellite platform introduced on February 27, 2025, designed for high-volume production and optimized for large-scale constellations. Announced at the company’s Spacecraft Production Complex in Long Beach, California, Flatellite is a scalable, stackable, high-power satellite tailored for national security, defense, and commercial markets, offering secure, low-latency connectivity and advanced remote sensing capabilities.
Its low-profile, stackable design maximizes launch efficiency, integrating seamlessly with Rocket Lab’s Neutron rocket, which can deploy up to 13,000 kg to low Earth orbit. Leveraging the company’s vertically integrated manufacturing—incorporating flight-proven components like propulsion, avionics, and MAX Constellation flight software—Flatellite promises reliable, long-life performance at a reduced cost, addressing the growing demand for affordable, rapidly deployable satellite systems.
This launch marks a strategic pivot for Rocket Lab, evolving from a launch provider to an end-to-end space company with ambitions to operate its own constellation. CEO Sir Peter Beck highlighted Flatellite as a response to “industry hunger for versatile satellites built fast in high volumes,” positioning it as a competitor to systems like Starlink. With a backlog exceeding 40 spacecraft and a multi-launch Neutron deal already signed, Rocket Lab aims to deploy Flatellite constellations starting mid-2026, potentially reshaping the $30 billion satellite market by offering both manufacturing and launch services under one roof.
