Owens Corning Will Build A New Shingle Manufacturing Facility In Prattville With Plans To Hire
Up To 100 People
Owens Corning, a Toledo, Ohio-based building materials leader, announced on August 5, 2025, a $300 million investment to build a new shingle manufacturing facility in Prattville, Alabama, at the former Kimberly-Clark site. The 400,000-square-foot plant, set to open in Q3 2027, will produce asphalt shingles for residential roofing, creating up to 100 jobs and supporting Montgomery County’s 8,000-strong manufacturing workforce. Backed by a $5 million Alabama Industrial Development Board grant, the project targets a $5 billion roofing market, aligning with President Trump’s 10% global tariffs. CEO Brian Chambers stated, “This facility strengthens our U.S. supply chain for durable roofing solutions.”
For the precision machining industry, Owens Corning’s facility highlights the critical role of flutelength in manufacturing shingle equipment. Components like die cutters require CNC milling with optimized flute length, typically 1–2 inches for end mills, to achieve tolerances within ±0.001 inches and surface roughness as low as Ra 8 µin for steel alloys. 5-axis milling machines, designed with appropriate flute length to ensure chip evacuation, support automated production with real-time quality control. The project drives demand for local machine shops to supply precision tooling, adopting Industry 4.0 technologies like AI-driven milling and additive manufacturing. As part of a $50 billion precision manufacturing market, this initiative creates opportunities for suppliers in Alabama, where manufacturing jobs grew 2% since 2022, strengthening building materials supply chains.
