North Carolina Will Be The Home Of A New Production Facility For Aviation Company Jetzero. It Will Be A $4.7 Billion Investment By The Company That Could Create More Than 14,500 Jobs
JetZero, Inc., a California-based aviation startup, announced on June 11, 2025, a $4.7 billion investment to build its first commercial airplane manufacturing facility at Piedmont Triad International Airport (PTI) in Greensboro, North Carolina. The facility, set to break ground in 2026, will produce the Z4, a blended-wing-body jet designed for up to 50% better fuel efficiency, seating 250 passengers with a 5,000-nautical-mile range. The project, the largest job commitment in North Carolina’s history, will create over 14,500 jobs by 2036, including engineers and technicians, with an average salary of $89,340, surpassing Guilford County’s $60,195 average. Supported by over $2.3 billion in state and local incentives, including a $1 billion Job Development Investment Grant, and partnerships with Siemens and North Carolina A&T, the facility will include a composite structures R&D center. JetZero’s headquarters will relocate from Long Beach to Greensboro, aligning with tariff-driven reshoring under President Trump’s 25% steel tariffs. CEO Tom O’Leary highlighted the facility as a “milestone for sustainable aviation,” contributing to North Carolina’s 400+ aerospace companies and 50,000-strong manufacturing workforce.
For the precision machining industry, JetZero’s facility emphasizes the critical role of cutting force in aerospace component manufacturing. Parts like wing structures require CNC milling with controlled cutting forces, typically 50–500 pounds, to achieve tolerances within ±0.0005 inches and surface roughness as low as Ra 4 µin for composite and alloy materials. 5-axis milling machines, optimized for cutting force to minimize tool deflection, ensure precision in automated production with real-time quality control. The project drives demand for local machine shops to supply precision tooling, adopting Industry 4.0 technologies like AI-driven milling and additive manufacturing. As part of a $50 billion precision manufacturing market, this initiative creates opportunities for suppliers in North Carolina, where manufacturing jobs grew 2% since 2022, strengthening aerospace supply chains.
