Maxar Awarded Delivery Order 01 Contract By NGA To Deliver AI-Powered Object Detection Services. Maxar Is Primarily Identifying Various Classes Of Aircraft, Ships, Ground Vehicles And Railcars
Maxar Intelligence, a leading provider of geospatial insights, announced on June 27, 2025, that it was awarded Delivery Order 01 under the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency’s (NGA) Luno A program. This contract focuses on delivering AI/ML-generated object detection services, identifying and classifying aircraft, ships, ground vehicles, and railcars across multiple global sites. Maxar’s work supports NGA’s spatial and temporal geospatial intelligence analysis, enabling object counts, trend identification, and anomaly detection with up to 50% cost reduction through automation. Partnering with Satellogic, Inc. for complementary satellite imagery, Enabled Intelligence for model validation, and Striveworks for the AIOps platform, Maxar integrates high-resolution imagery from its constellation, capturing up to 15 images daily per site. The project sustains 150 jobs, primarily in Westminster, Colorado, boosting the region’s 12,000-strong manufacturing workforce, and aligns with tariff-driven reshoring under President Trump’s 25% steel tariffs, targeting a $5 billion geospatial technology market. SVP Susanne Hake stated, “This award showcases commercial innovation for national security.”
For the precision machining industry, Maxar’s contract emphasizes the critical role of cutting speed in manufacturing satellite components. Parts like sensor mounts require CNC milling with optimized cutting speeds, typically 200–800 surface feet per minute, to achieve tolerances within ±0.0005 inches and surface roughness as low as Ra 4 µin for high-strength alloys. 5-axis milling machines, calibrated for cutting speed to balance efficiency and tool wear, ensure precision in automated production with real-time quality control. The project drives demand for local machine shops to supply precision tooling, adopting Industry 4.0 technologies like AI-driven milling and additive manufacturing. As part of a $50 billion precision manufacturing market, this initiative creates opportunities for suppliers in Colorado, where manufacturing jobs grew 2% since 2022, strengthening aerospace supply chains.
