Mars, Incorporated, A Global Leader And Maker Of More Than 40 Brands, Is Announcing The Expansion Of Royal Canin Through The Opening Of A 450,000 Square-Foot Facility In Lewisburg, Ohio. The $450 Million Site Will Create Up To 270 New Full-Time Jobs

Mars, Incorporated, a global leader known for brands like M&M’s, Snickers, and Royal Canin, celebrated the grand opening of a $450 million, 450,000-square-foot pet food manufacturing facility in Lewisburg, Ohio, on May 14, 2025. The state-of-the-art plant, Royal Canin’s largest dry pet food facility worldwide, produces premium dry cat and dog food to feed approximately 4 million pets annually, targeting a $30 billion U.S. pet food market. The facility, located in Preble County, will create up to 270 full-time jobs over the next five years, offering wages above the county’s $50,000 average, and supports Ohio’s 75,000-strong manufacturing workforce. Backed by state incentives and part of Mars’ $6 billion U.S. investment since 2015, the plant features automated production lines and sustainable practices, aligning with tariff-driven reshoring trends under President Trump’s 10% tariffs. CEO Poul Weihrauch emphasized the facility’s role in “delivering quality nutrition” and fostering a “cat and dog-first culture.”

For the precision machining industry, the Lewisburg facility underscores the critical role of tool life in pet food manufacturing. Components like extrusion dies and conveyor rollers require CNC milling of stainless steel, where tool life, influenced by cutting forces and material hardness, ensures consistent tolerances within ±0.001 inches and surface roughness as low as Ra 8 µin. 5-axis milling machines, optimized to maximize tool life through controlled chip loads, support high-volume automated lines with real-time quality control. The facility’s advanced automation drives demand for local machine shops to supply durable tooling, adopting Industry 4.0 technologies like AI-driven milling and additive manufacturing. As part of a $50 billion precision manufacturing market, this project creates opportunities for suppliers in Ohio, where manufacturing jobs grew 2% since 2022, strengthening supply chains for pet food production.
