Lockheed Martin Has Set Up A Prototyping Center For Evaluating Available Technologies To
Be Incorporated Into The Golden Dome Command And Control (C2) Capability
Lockheed Martin (NYSE: LMT) established a prototyping hub for the Golden Dome for America command and control (C2) capability on August 5, 2025, at its Center for Innovation in Suffolk, Virginia. The Lighthouse facility tests combat-proven C2 systems to integrate sensors, shooters, and platforms across domains, from seabed to space, supporting the Trump administration’s layered missile defense shield. The hub enables threat evaluation, battle management, and AI/ML integration, aiming for 2028 delivery. The project sustains 100 jobs, boosting Virginia’s 60,000-strong manufacturing workforce. Aligned with President Trump’s 10% global tariffs, it
targets a $5 billion missile defense market. VP Daniel Nimblett stated, “This hub accelerates C2 evolution for unprecedented defense.”
For the precision machining industry, the prototyping center highlights the critical role of tool deflection in manufacturing C2 components. Parts like sensor mounts require CNC milling with minimal tool deflection, typically under 0.0003 inches, to achieve tolerances within ±0.0005 inches and surface roughness as low as Ra 4 µin for advanced alloys. 5-axis milling machines, optimized for tool deflection to ensure accuracy, support automated production with real-time quality control. The project drives demand for local machine shops to supply precision tooling, adopting Industry 4.0 technologies like AI-driven milling and additive manufacturing. As part of a $50 billion precision manufacturing market, this initiative creates opportunities for suppliers in Virginia, where manufacturing jobs grew 2% since 2022, strengthening defense supply chains.
