FREYR Cancels Plans for ‘Giga America’ Battery Factory in Georgia, Impacting 700 Expected Jobs

Norwegian battery manufacturer FREYR has officially informed officials in Newnan, Georgia, that it will not proceed with the construction of its “Giga America” battery facility. The plant, which was expected to create over 700 jobs, was a key part of FREYR’s expansion strategy into the U.S. market. The company cited shifting market conditions and evolving business priorities as reasons for the decision, leaving local leaders scrambling to find alternative opportunities for economic growth.

This cancellation marks a setback for Georgia’s push to become a hub for battery production and electric vehicle supply chains. The state has been aggressively attracting clean energy investments, but FREYR’s withdrawal raises concerns about the stability of similar projects. Economic development officials are now working to repurpose the site and attract other manufacturers to fill the void left by FREYR.

For the precision machining industry, the halted project means reduced demand for specialized battery production equipment and precision components. However, with ongoing federal incentives for domestic battery manufacturing, other companies may step in to capitalize on the opportunity, keeping supply chain demand fluid.
