Electric Hydrofoil Boat Manufacturer Vessev Announced Expansion Plans. The New Office Is Its First At The International Level And Will Be The New Headquarters As It Looks To “Establish A Strong Market Presence In The US.”
Vessev, a New Zealand-based electric hydrofoil boat manufacturer, announced ambitious U.S. expansion plans on March 27, 2025, opening its first international office in Rhode Island, which will serve as the headquarters for its overseas operations. The move aims to establish a strong market presence in the $50 billion U.S. marine industry, with plans for local manufacturing of its flagship VS-9 hydrofoil, a 10-passenger vessel that “flies” above waves at 25 knots with a 50-nautical-mile range. Led by newly appointed North American Director Josh Trout, a marine technology veteran with over 20 years of experience, Vessev will focus on producing sustainable vessels for commercial operators and private clients, building on its success with Fullers360 in New Zealand, where the VS-9 began commercial tourism operations in January 2025. The expansion is expected to create jobs in Rhode Island and support Vessev’s goal of scaling production, with a larger 100-passenger VS-18 in development.
For the precision machining industry, Vessev’s expansion signals growing demand for high-precision manufacturing capabilities. The VS-9’s hydrofoils, inspired by America’s Cup yacht technology, require advanced CNC machining to craft lightweight, durable carbon-fiber and aluminum components with micron-level tolerances, ensuring stability and efficiency under high-speed aquatic stresses. The vessel’s electric propulsion system, including battery housings and motor mounts, relies on precision milling and turning to achieve tight fits for optimal power transfer and heat dissipation. As Vessev plans U.S. production, machine shops will need to adopt multi-axis machining and composite material expertise, driving innovations in automation and tooling. This aligns with a $40 billion aerospace and marine machining market, where precision manufacturing is critical for sustainable technologies, potentially creating opportunities for local suppliers and advancing techniques like additive manufacturing for marine applications.
