DallasNews Corp. Closes $43.5M Sale Of Its Plano Printing Facility, Which Will Become a Golf Cart Manufacturing Plant
DallasNews Corporation (Nasdaq: DALN), the parent company of The Dallas Morning News, finalized the $43.5 million sale of its 620,000-square-foot printing facility at 3900 West Plano Parkway in Plano, Texas, on March 13, 2025, to Denago EV, a Florida-based manufacturer of low-speed vehicles and electric golf carts. The deal, first announced in December 2024, marks a strategic shift for DallasNews, which has relocated its printing operations to a smaller, leased 67,600-square-foot facility in Carrollton, Texas, saving an estimated $5 million annually while cutting 85 jobs. Denago EV plans to repurpose the 29-acre site as its Southern U.S. production and manufacturing hub, leveraging the facility’s robust infrastructure to scale production of electric golf carts for a $7 billion low-speed vehicle market. The sale nets DallasNews approximately $39 million after taxes and costs, with proceeds earmarked to fully fund its $16 million pension liabilities for over 1,300 employees, enhancing financial stability.
For the precision machining industry, Denago EV’s transformation of the Plano facility into a golf cart manufacturing plant highlights the growing importance of flexible manufacturing systems. Producing electric golf carts requires precision machining to fabricate lightweight aluminum chassis, battery housings, and motor components with tight tolerances, ensuring durability and energy efficiency. CNC machining centers and laser cutting tools will be essential for crafting custom parts like suspension brackets and drivetrain gears, while robotic automation could streamline assembly lines to meet high-volume demand. This redevelopment is expected to drive demand for local machine shops equipped with multi-axis machining and additive manufacturing capabilities, fostering innovation in lightweight materials like carbon composites. As North Texas solidifies its role as a manufacturing hub—evidenced by Siemens’ $190 million Fort Worth plant opening in March 2025—this project underscores opportunities for precision manufacturers to support a $40 billion advanced manufacturing market, enhancing regional supply chains and technical expertise.
