Chelsea Building Products Recently Broke Ground On A New 228,000-Square-Foot Manufacturing Facility In Westmoreland County The Project Will Increase Production Capacity
Chelsea Building Products, an Oakmont, Pennsylvania-based manufacturer, broke ground on April 8, 2025, for a new 228,000-square-foot facility in Westmoreland County’s Commerce Crossing industrial park in Sewickley Township. The $30 million project, following a $1.8 million land purchase in December 2023, will boost production capacity for extruded PVC window and door profiles and include a blending facility for PVC compounds used on-site and at its Greenville, Texas, plant. Designed for future expansion by up to 170,000 square feet, the facility features insulated precast construction, 100’x50’ production bays, 32’ clear height, 10 dock positions, and a 10,000-amp electrical service, with rail access via the Southwest Pennsylvania Railroad. Managed by ARCO Pittsburgh, the project is expected to create 100-150 jobs by 2030, supporting Westmoreland County’s 9,100-strong industrial workforce. CEO Peter Dewil emphasized improved efficiencies by consolidating manufacturing and warehousing, addressing demand in a $25 billion window and door market. The facility, Chelsea’s third U.S. site, strengthens its aluplast group-backed operations.
For the precision machining industry, the facility’s focus on extrusion manufacturing drives demand for precision-machined components critical to production equipment. Extrusion lines require high-precision dies, calibration tools, and cooling fixtures, crafted with 5-axis CNC milling and laser cutting to achieve sub-millimeter tolerances for consistent PVC profiles. The blending facility’s mixers and conveyors rely on precision-machined parts like stainless steel blades and gear systems, produced with advanced grinding and EDM (electrical discharge machining) for durability. This expansion pushes local machine shops to adopt automation and real-time quality control, fostering innovation in polymer-compatible tooling and composites. As part of a $40 billion precision manufacturing market, the project creates opportunities for suppliers in Pennsylvania, where manufacturing jobs have grown 2% since 2023, enhancing supply chains and technical expertise for high-volume production.
