BWX Technologies Secures $2.1 Billion U.S. Navy Contract for Nuclear Reactor Components

The U.S. Navy is doubling down on nuclear power, and BWX Technologies (BWXT) is at the helm of this critical mission. The company has been awarded a $2.1 billion contract by the U.S. Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program to supply nuclear reactor components for Columbia-class submarines, Virginia-class submarines, and Ford-class aircraft carriers. This multi-year deal, spanning seven years from 2023, ensures reliable propulsion systems for the Navy’s fleet, leveraging BWXT’s decades of expertise in nuclear energy solutions for defense. The contract includes manufacturing and delivering precision-engineered reactor parts at BWXT Nuclear Operations Group facilities in Lynchburg, Virginia; Barberton and Euclid, Ohio; and Mount Vernon, Indiana.

As naval defense programs expand, the demand for high-tolerance, high-reliability components is surging. Machine shops with skills in precision machining and advanced materials could find new opportunities in defense supply chains, potentially driving innovation and workforce development in the sector. Beyond this contract, BWXT’s recent activities—including a $1 billion+ deal for Ontario nuclear projects and the $525 million acquisition of Kinectrics—signal its growing footprint in the nuclear industry, both military and commercial.
