Advanced Manufacturing And Aerospace Center (AMAC), A New $80 Million Research And Education Facility Opened At The University Of Texas At El Paso
The University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) inaugurated its $80 million Advanced Manufacturing and Aerospace Center (AMAC) on April 11, 2025, with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the Florissant Valley Campus attended by over 300, including El Paso Mayor Renard Johnson, County Judge Ricardo Samaniego, and UT System Chairman Kevin P. Eltife. The 93,000-square-foot, four-story facility, funded by the UT System Board of Regents and a $3 million federal grant, houses 29 laboratories for UTEP’s Aerospace Center and W.M. Keck Center for 3D Innovation. Designed by TreanorHL and Ayers Saint Gross in UTEP’s Bhutanese style and built by Sundt Construction, AMAC supports research in moon habitation, space robotics, and exotic-material 3D printing, training over 600 students annually. With partnerships spanning NASA, Lockheed Martin, and Blue Origin, the center bolsters El Paso’s aerospace hub, where manufacturing employs 30,000 workers. UTEP President Heather Wilson noted its role in “national defense and economic growth,” with alumni already at Boeing and SpaceX.
For the precision machining industry, AMAC’s opening amplifies the demand for advanced manufacturing technologies. The center’s 3D printers and robotics labs require precision-machined components, such as titanium alloy printer frames and drone motor mounts, crafted with 5-axis CNC milling and laser cutting to achieve sub-micron tolerances for high-performance applications. Producing these parts demands expertise in computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) and real-time quality control, skills now taught at AMAC to support a $100 million research portfolio. The facility’s focus on additive manufacturing and AI-driven materials science drives local machine shops to adopt hybrid machining techniques, integrating CNC and 3D printing for rapid prototyping. As part of a $50 billion advanced manufacturing market, AMAC creates opportunities for suppliers in West Texas, where aerospace job growth rose 5% since 2022, fostering innovation in lightweight composites and automation.
