A Team Of New York-Based Builders Secured The Final Contract For Phase One On A Major Infrastructure Job In Syracuse, According To A News Release From Gov. Kathy Hochul’s Office

A team of New York-based builders, led by O’Connell Electric Company and supported by local subcontractors, secured the final $148 million contract for Phase One of a major infrastructure project in Syracuse, New York, as announced by Governor Kathy Hochul’s office on April 21, 2025. The project, part of the $2.25 billion I-81 Viaduct replacement, involves constructing a one-mile community grid to reconnect downtown Syracuse with new roundabouts, ramps, and bridges, replacing the aging elevated highway. Phase One, covering Business Loop 81, includes advanced manufacturing for precast concrete segments and steel girders, with work starting in summer 2025 and completion expected by 2028. The contract, funded by the 2021 Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, prioritizes local hiring and minority- and women-owned businesses, creating over 1,200 jobs in Onondaga County, where manufacturing employs 24,000 workers. Governor Hochul emphasized the project’s role in “modernizing infrastructure while boosting Syracuse’s economy,” with 70% of subcontracts awarded to Central New York firms. The initiative aligns with $180 million in additional state funding for related grid improvements.

For the precision machining industry, the Syracuse project highlights the critical role of precision forming in infrastructure manufacturing. Precast concrete segments and steel girders require high-accuracy molds and fixtures, crafted with 5-axis CNC milling and laser cutting to achieve sub-millimeter tolerances for seamless assembly. Precision forming ensures durability under heavy traffic loads, using custom tooling fabricated with EDM and real-time quality control for consistent production. The project’s scale drives demand for local machine shops to supply automated forming systems, fostering innovation in high-strength composites and Industry 4.0 technologies like digital twins. As part of a $50 billion infrastructure manufacturing market, this initiative creates opportunities for suppliers in New York, where manufacturing jobs grew 2% since 2022, strengthening supply chains amid tariff-driven reshoring pressures.
