A New Research Center At The University Of South Carolina
Aiken Boasts A Mini Data Center For Running Artificial
Intelligence Experiments And More

The University of South Carolina Aiken (USCA) opened the $66 million Advanced

Manufacturing Collaborative (AMC) on August 7, 2025, a 60,000-square-foot research center in partnership with the U.S. Department of Energy’s Savannah River National Laboratory (SRNL). The facility features a mini data center for running artificial intelligence experiments, a two-story-tall room for massive projects, and a biomaterials manufacturing lab equipped with robotics and 3D printers. The AMC supports AI-driven research in energy, nuclear, and advanced materials, including AI for catalyst discovery and structural health monitoring. The center will train 200

students annually and create 50 jobs, boosting Aiken County’s 5,000-strong manufacturing workforce. Funded by the DOE, the project aligns with President Trump’s 10% global tariffs, targeting a $5 billion AI research market. USCA Chancellor Dan Heimmermann stated, “This center equips students for cutting-edge careers in AI and manufacturing.”

For the precision machining industry, the AMC emphasizes the critical role of surface roughness in AI-optimized component manufacturing. Parts like biomaterials scaffolds require CNC milling with precise surface roughness, typically Ra 0.5–2 µin, to achieve tolerances within ±0.001

inches for biocompatibility. 5-axis milling machines, programmed with AI-driven parameters, ensure surface roughness for automated production with real-time quality control. The center’s labs drive demand for local machine shops to supply precision tooling, adopting Industry 4.0 technologies like AI-driven milling and additive manufacturing. As part of a $50 billion precision manufacturing market, this initiative creates opportunities for suppliers in South Carolina, where manufacturing jobs grew 2% since 2022, strengthening advanced materials supply chains.
