The Hayes Innovation Center for Advanced Manufacturing (HICAM), a nonprofit dedicated to economic and workforce development, completed construction of its 52,000-square-foot facility at 6201 Quinn Luke Trail in East Austin, Texas, with a soft opening announced on April 17, 2025. Located on a seven-acre campus along the SH 130 corridor near Tesla’s Giga Texas, the $20 million project, backed by the SH 130 Municipal Management District, features industrial spaces, 3D printing labs, CNC tables, and classrooms for startups and training in robotics, automation, and additive manufacturing. HICAM, named after modular building pioneer Warren Hayes, partners with Austin Community College (ACC) to offer a six-to-nine-month certificate program in high-tech manufacturing and digital fabrication, including ACC’s Engineering Development Program for Tesla employees. The facility supports over 20 startups through its accelerator program and is expected to create 100 jobs by 2027, boosting East Austin’s 15,000-strong manufacturing workforce. Executive Director Marcus Metzger emphasized its role in “building a skilled workforce for Central Texas’ advanced manufacturing ecosystem,” targeting a $50 billion regional tech market.

For the precision machining industry, HICAM’s focus on digital fabrication drives demand for precision-machined components critical to advanced manufacturing equipment. The center’s 3D printers and CNC tables require high-accuracy parts, such as extruder nozzles and machine beds, crafted with 5-axis CNC milling and laser cutting to achieve sub-micron tolerances for reliable prototyping and production. Digital fabrication integrates these components into automated systems, using precision grinding and EDM to ensure durability in high-throughput environments. The facility’s startup ecosystem and training programs push local machine shops to adopt smart manufacturing techniques, including IoT-enabled quality control and hybrid machining, fostering innovation in lightweight composites and robotics. As part of a $40 billion precision manufacturing market, HICAM creates opportunities for suppliers in Austin, where manufacturing jobs grew 4% since 2022, strengthening supply chains and advancing technical expertise.
